It is important to select the most appropriate material for purpose when ordering an anatomical model. The main materials to choose from are resin, nylon and plaster, however, should you require a different material we are likely to be able to accommodate you.
Resin is translucent and strong. It is ideal for making "working models" for the surgical team to practice cutting, drilling and fitting appliances. Nylon is white, opaque and strong; it is also autoclavable. Plaster can be used with colour to highlight different structures within the model (for example teeth, implants, bone grafts, surgical screws and plating). Although it is ordinarily quite brittle, it can be infiltrated with glue to strengthen it. It is very appropriate for making study models for visualising defects for instance, rather than for making working models for practising surgery (e.g. cutting, drilling).
The resin, nylon and plaster models are each made with different rapid-prototyping (3D printing) technologies. Our internal research has shown that the best geometrical accuracy and finer details are produced by our resin prototyper. Sheet titanium is available through our sister company Cavendish Implants which designs craniomaxillofacial implant templates or makes the implants themselves.
